STAPLING IN GASTROINTESTINAL SURGERY
George Rady Gurgus;
Abstract
Stapling is a technique in which we use special instruments capable of performing gastro-intestinal anastomoses by using staples. The 1st stapling instrument was introduced by Hummer Hultl of Budapest in 1908 at the
2nd congress of the 'hungarian surgical society. In 1960's, the institute for experiment and instruments in Moscow developed different groups of stapling instruments which included:
1) A series of linear staplers, of which the American
equivalents are the TA staplers.
2) A linear anastomosing instrument, of which American equivalent is the GIA and
3) circular or intraluminal staplers of which the united
states equivalents are the EEA and the ILS staplers (Ravitch and Steichen, 1985). Each instrument either linear or circular has a cartridge containing the staplers and an anvil for formirg the staples. The TA stapler and circular stapler drive two staggered rows of staples
