MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF BREAST CANCER

Omar Mohamed Atef Sharaf;

Abstract

This thesis inc'.luded the demonstration of the role of magnetic resonance, imaging (MRI) examination in
I
detection and characterization of malignant tumors of the
I
breast. 1

The review of literature enclosed the anatomical background of the breast as well as the pathologic bases of the malignant breast' tumors. The indications of MRI examination of the breast and the MRI appearance of
malignant breast tumor were also revised.
I
The practical work included the MRI examination of cases presenting with breast lesion(s) suspicious for malignancy using double breast coil. The most important sequence in our protocol study is the rapid dynamic imaging within the first few minutes after IV injection of gadolinium contrast agent followed by image subtraction of the pre- from the post-contrast images allowing more accurate interpretation. '.

Once a lesion was detected, delayed imaging was performed to assess its value in tissue characterization. The MRI examination was preceded by clinical evaluation of the cases as well as .mammographic and sonographic examination in some cases.

I
The results of this study showed the value of MRI in
l
increasing detectability , of malignant breast lesions
