Enhancing Augmented Model Stabilization to Visualize Subsurface Infrastructure Networks

Hossam Tarek Hassan Metwally;

Abstract

Augmented Reality plays an important role in engaging end-user and owners in the design development stage of construction projects. This research aims at leveraging the usage of BIM 3D models specifically for underground utilities in Facility management with the help of Augmented Reality as a digital transformation solution along with Cloud Solutions to overcome data storing and management challenges. Previous studies found that applying Augmented Reality have two main obstacles which are virtual object alignment with real environment and data storing and management. This research provides a mobile application that help operation and maintenance engineers in retrieving As-built drawings in a graphical representation enriched with facility data using Augmented Reality technology. The results reveal that construction industry could maximize the benefits of BIM by applying such visualization techniques by analyzing time and cost consumed in retrieving data onsite using manual methods versus digital method
