The relation between Cognitive Functions and Prevalent Hemodialysis in a sample of Elderly Patients in Cairo

Abstract


Our study was a prospective longitudinal study, carried out on 60 patients, 60 years and older, randomly selected, attending Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt. 30 patients were End Stage Renal disease (ESRD) under regular hemodialysis, considered as group A, they were assessed at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. Another 30 patients were Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) on conservative treatment, considered as group B, they assessed at baseline only.
Our study aimed to evaluate frequency, severity and associated risk factors of cognitive impairement in prevalent hemodialysis patients and to investigate the possible risk factors of cognitive impairment in HD patients.
An informed consent was taken. Participants were subjected to history taking, full clinical examination, comprehensive geriatric assessment, and cognitive assessment by Mini Mental State examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive assessment (MoCA). Laboratory investigations was including: Hemoglobin level, Urea, Creatinine, Sodium, Potassium, Total calcium, Phosphorus, Intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), Albumin and viral markers. Ankle brachial index was done for assessment of atherosclerosis.
