Mothers’ Prevention of Gastroenteritis Diseases Among Preschool Child

Abstract

Background: Gastroenteritis in children represents a serious public health problem worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess mothers’ prevention of gastroenteritis diseases among preschool children. Research design: A descriptive analytical research design was utilized. Setting: This study was conducted at outpatient clinic of pediatric department at Bassion central hospital. Sample: purposive sample comprised of 100 mothers which collected through six months. Tools: An interviewing questionnaire consisted of four parts: First part: Demographic characteristics of studied sample. Second part: Past history of a preschool child. Third part Mothers’ knowledge about gastroenteritis diseases among preschool child. Forth part: Mothers’ reported practices toward prevention of gastroenteritis. Results: 60% of mothers had satisfactory knowledge about gastroenteritis prevention., 38% of mothers had unsatisfactory reported practices and 62% of them had satisfactory practices toward preventive measures of gastroenteritis for their children Conclusion: There were highly statistically significant relations among total knowledge score of mothers, their marital status, level of education, work of mother, number of family members and economic status of the family, there was highly statistically significance relation among the total reported practices score of mothers and level of education and occupation of mothers, and there were highly statistically significant correlation among total knowledge of mothers, their reported practices toward gastroenteritis and its prevention. Recommendations: Health educational program should be developed and implemented for mothers to improve and update them with the most current information about preschool children gastroenteritis prevention.
