Abstract

This study included 20 diabetic patients, l O patients out of them were with autonomic neuropathy and IO patients were without autonomic neuropathy and also 5 control individulas. All patients and the controls group were studied for their gastric emptying and Duplex ultrasound of the superior mesenteric artery.

Our patients were evaluated clinically by thorough history taking regarding their age, sex, duration of their disease, fami]y history and their complaints. Laboratory investigations including fasting, post - prandial blood sugar (FBS, PPBS) and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbAC).

Gastric emptying study using Tc 99 m pertechnitate for fluid meal and Tc 99 m sulfer colloid for solid meal with 24 hours between each study. The time activity curves (TAC) were processed. It was found that there was significant difference for gastric emptying of solid meal between diabetic patients with and those without autonomic neuropathy. There was no significant difference between gastric emptying for fluid meal between diabetic patients with and without autonomic neuropathy.

Duplex ultrasound scanning of the mesenteric vessel has become the ideal method for the diagnosis of chronic mesenteric insufficiency. Tn our study, the diabetic neuropathic group, showed that those with autonomic
