ANALYSIS OF SURGICAL TECHNIQUES AND FUNCTIONAL RESULTS OF DIGITAL REPLANTATION FOLLOWING TRAUMATIC AMPUTATION

Muhammad Abdel-Moneim Quolquela;

Abstract

The following conclusions were drawn from this study
I. Replantation of amputated digits is a worthwhile procedure which should be carried out whenever possible as it gives a better functional and cosmetic results than amputation.
2. It is indicated in multiple digit amputation at a wide range of age especially middle age as it was associated with the best survival rate, single digit amputation proximal to the DIP joint provided the amputation stump is not crushed with a warm ischemic time up to eight hours.
3. Survival of replanted digits was influenced by heaviness of smoking, severity of the injury i.e. number of replanted digits per a single hand. Survival was higher among non-smokers and light ones compared with heavy smokers. Also, survival rate was high in those with single or double replanted digits compared with those with more replanted digits per hand and these effects were statistically significant.
