Abstract


This present research aims at evaluating the speaking skills in the English language among the 3rd-year secondary school students in Libyan Jamahiria. A pilot study was conducted on a sample of 3rd-year secondary students, and some English
(language teachers in Bani-Walid city, which revealed the
existence of poor speaking ability among those students. Therefore, the researcher raised three research questions in an attempt to investigate this problem.
1. What is the real status quo of teaching the speaking skills among those students?
2. What are the main aspects of weakness with reference to
causes?
3. What are some remedial techniques which may help in improving these skills?
Some relative pertinent literature in the field of teaching, evaluating or developing the speaking skills in the English language is presented after a brief survey of teaching and learning the English language in Libyan Jamahiria.
Also, a theoretical background· is discussed in chapter
s
three which tackl~lsome aspects concerning the speaking skills.
The researcher conducted two ,juried questionnaires to a sample of (160) 3rd-year students and another sample of (50)
English language teachers, as well as the interviewing of some
E.L. inspectors.
