PHYSICOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON SOME TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

Saad Mohamed El Said;

Abstract

The first chapter of this thesis "the introduction" includes a literature survey of the previous work carried on spectral and potential studies of different azo compounds and their complexes in solution. It also includes different spectrophotometric methods for determination of lanthanide metal ions.
2- The experimental part of the thesis "chapter 2"; describes the method of
preparing the azo compounds under study viz; 4-{-2-hydroxy (1),2,
4-dihydroxy (II), 2-hydroxy-5-carboxy (III) and 2-hydroxy-5• amino (IV)}, phenylazo 1-phenyl-2,3-dimethyl- pyrazol-5-one, preparing various solutions used and their methods of standerization. It also describes different spectroscopic, conductometric and potentiometric methods along with the instrumentation used in study.
3- Chapter 3 includes the results obtained and their discussion. It contains
four main parts:.
3-a. Studying the possipility of complex formation in solution and its stoichiometry by using conductometric titration where it is found that complexes of stoichiometric ratios (1 :1) and (1 :2) (M:L) are formed.
3-b. Studying acid dissociation constants of the organic ligands and formation constants of the formed complexes at different temperatures and different values of ionic strengthes (0.5,1.0,1 .5 and
2.0 M KCI) using potentiometric technique where it is found that.
3-b-i. At room temperature and ionic strength of 1.0 M KCI, the acid dissociation constants of azo compounds are closly related to the nature of substituent group in p-position to the -N=N- linkage where they lie in the order: X=Hor effect of each substituent
