Assessing The Effect of Modified Bluegrass Vs Conventional Lingual Spurs in The Correction of Open Bite associated with Tongue Thrust: Comparative study
Amani Taher Hebat Allah Ali;
Abstract
The aim of this study was to study the effect of Modified Bluegrass "Non-Punitive therapy” on tongue thrust and dentoalveolar structure and to compare it with Conventional Lingual Spurs "Punitive therapy".
Digital radiography along with study model were used to study the effects of the two treatments protocol, and not only providing 3-dimensional assessment of dentoalveolar structure., but also reduce the dose of radiation.
Twenty subjects of an anterior open bite patients were recruited from the outpatient clinic of the Orthodontic Department, Faculty of dentistry, Ain Shams University. Out of these 20 subjects, only 15 cases complied to wearing the appliance and were included in the study. The patients were all growing, with an age range of 7-13 years,
A comprehensive diagnosis was performed for each case. Digital Lateral cephalometric and panoramic radiographs were traced using digital software. using "OrisCeph® Rx3" (version 7.2.3), by the same trained clinician. Extra-oral and intra-oral photographs and study models were also taken for each patient. The patient’s records were thoroughly analyzed, only after verifying the inclusion criteria for teach selected cases, diagnostic records were taken along with impressions and wax bites for the appliance’s fabrication. When received from the laboratory, the appliances were disinfected, fitted then cemented and adjusted in the patient’s mouth. The patients in both groups and their legal guardians were enlightened about the advantages of the appliances, which entailed an inducing a change in the resting position of the tongue, thus allowing tooth eruption and open bite closure, and instructed the patient mainly in the M.B.G group to continuously rotate the acrylic rollers by their tongues. Treatment was consummated once the subject ends 1 year of follow up and a positive overbite was achieved, regardless, to the fact that it could be achieved sooner .
