Evaluation of the diagnostic and prognostic values of percutaneous nephrostomy tubes (PCN) in cases of obstructive uropathy in uraemic patients

Ehab Osama Ebrahim Ahmed El-Ganainy;

Abstract

The aim of our study is to detect the benefit from application of PCN
tubes to uraemic patients associated with organic obstructive nephropathy.
The study was carried on 50 patients of both sexes (45males and 5 females),and all age groups (commenet age was 20-40years). All patients had two main inclusion criteria which were:
-Serum creatinine above 3mg% and blood urea nitrogen above 80mg%.
-Pelvicalyceal system dilatation diagnosed mainly by abdominal sonar.
Follow up schedule was done 2weeks, 1, 2 and 3months after PCN
application.
From interpretation of the results we concluded that:
The response of the obstructed nephroureteral unit to relief of obstruction using
PCN is widely variable and depends on several factors as follows:
-Age: with increasing age the response to relief of obstruction becomes guarded.
-Sex: could not be properly evaluated due to the relatively small number of females in our study.
-History of dialysis: insignificant response is usually expected in patients on regular dialysis, while few runs of dialysis may have little impact on the response to relief of obstruction.
