THE ORGAN - CONSERVING TREATMENT OF EARLY CARCINOMA OF THE BREAST
Mohamed Moustafa Taha Zaazoua;
Abstract
One of the major achievement in the last 20 years is the
awareness that Mastectomy (Mutilating surgery) is a biologically obsolete therapeutic approach, and no longer indicated in the treatment of early breast cancer which in tum, has a dramatic effect; as mammory gland preservation is obviously an important consideration for each woman.
Both large and small randomized trials are now available with long term follow up that show equivalent survival with breast conservation surgery versus mastectomy. These studies also show no difference in local recurrence or disstant metastases.
Low complication rates and good,to excellent cosmetic results
are well documented.
Conservation surgery of the breast implies the resection of· minimal volumes of diseased breast tissue to achievee control rates
equivalent to those accomplished by mastectomy, it has the goal of
. ~ preservation of cosmesis and function. This limited resection is
followed by axillary lymph nodes clearance followed by radiation and
systemic therapy in early breast cancer stage I & II.
The material of this study was formed of 50 female patients having carcinoma of the breast as proved by lump biopsy using trucut
.: needle or excisional biopsy, these patients were selected from all the
cases of cancer breast attended the outpatient clinic of EI-Minia
University hospital and National cancer Institute in the period from
