Clinical significance of Serum Cholinesterase in the diagnosis and assessment of clinical activity in patients with IBD

Fady Samir Emil Khella;

Abstract

Since IBD is a chronic nonspecific inflammatory reactive disease, involves a variety of immune cells and inflammatory factors. As a classic neural circuit that can regulate innate immunity, the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway is involved in the occurrence and development of IBD. So serum cholinesterase reflects the immune system ability to increase acetylcholine levels to lower the inflammatory process of IBD patients by lowering serum cholinesterase, so lower levels indicate higher process of inflammation in the body.
So serum cholinesterase can be used as prognostic biomarker in IBD patients.
Our study was conducted on 70 subjects, with 25 patients with Crohn’s disease, 25 patients with ulcerative colitis and 20 healthy subjects in Ain Shams University hospital of internal medicine.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of serum cholinesterase in diagnosis of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
All patients included in our study were subjected to full history taking and clinical examination and the patients who had shown IBD symptoms underwent colonoscopy and pathological examination for their biopsies.
