New light on three statues from the Barkal Cemetery

Alzohary, Nashat;

Abstract

The subject of this article is a collection of three Meroitic statues from Barkal Cemetery and preserved in the Boston Fine Arts Museum. All of them have been mentioned in print (PM VII, 207; Dunham 1957, 55, 62, 115, pls. XXXVIII A, B, C), but in such a summary fashion as to be easily overlooked. They deserve thorough study, and it is my purpose here to publish the three figures in question. The present work will discuss these statues and their funerary role in the Kingdom of Kush. It includes both a description and a commentary. The description carefully examines and documents the statues, while the commentary investigates the symbolism and function of the statues and the funerary role of the Osirian triad, Osiris, Isis and Nephthys.
