Abstract
This paper aims to publish and study of six rare pocket watches from the collection of Prince Youssef Kamal, preserved in the Museum of Egyptian Capitals. It is done through two approaches: the first is descriptive, reviewing the description of these watches, and the second is analytical, addressing several topics, including: the personality of Prince Youssef Kamal as a patron of the arts and a collector of antiques, the history of the manufacture of pocket watches and its development, methods of adjusting and winding them, in addition to their styles and sizes, their component parts, the materials used in their manufacture, methods of manufacturing and decoration, and their decorative elements, with an attempt to date them and attribute them to the country in which they were manufactured, relying on the technical aspect of their manufacture, decoration methods, and similar dated models.
The research problem, given that it is a new publication, aims to reveal the functions of these watches, their history, and to know their sources, how they came to the prince, and the extent of their connection to his personality and hobbies, in addition to interpreting the pictorial themes appearing on them. The results of the study showed a clear diversity in the styles and functions of these watches; These included watches with two hands for hours and minutes, as well as multi-functional watches such as chronographs (stopwatches), Gregorian calendars, dual time zones, and alarms.
The study also revealed that these watches date back to various periods, between the end of the 11th century AH/17th century CE and the end of the 13th century AH/19th century CE, indicating that they were not specifically made for the prince. The study also revealed that some of these watches were decorated with pictorial motifs reflecting mythological, religious, and landscape themes, such as Cupid and Venus, the Madonna and Child, the Bosphorus Strait, and oriental flowers. This indicates the diversity of their European sources, and that some were made specifically for the Ottoman market.
