Ameliorative effects of wogonin on liver damage in streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats

Abstract


This work was deliberated to appraise the hepatoprotective action of wogonin in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in rats. Diabetes was induced in rats by a single injection dose of STZ (65 mg/kg, i.p). Diabetic animals were treated with wogonin (15 and 30 mg/kg/day, p.o) for six weeks. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, and serum glucose levels were significantly elevated in diabetic rats as an expression of liver damage. Wogonin remedy significantly reduced serum glucose, AST, ALT and ALP levels in the diabetic rats. Oxidative stress was definite by elevating malondialdehyde (MDA), as a lipid peroxidation product, and declining total glutathione (T-GSH), as antioxidant, non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. Wogonin treatments decreased MDA, while increased the activity of T-GSH, NP-SH, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Nucleic acids and total protein levels were also elevated in wogonin treated diabetic rats. Our biochemical verdicts were in harmony with the improving of the histopathological changes caused by wogonin treatment. These results indicated that wogonin defeated STZ-induced diabetes by inhibition of lipid peroxidative system via its antioxidant and hepatoprotective influences. Wogonin has a significant role in alleviating liver damage caused by STZ-induced diabetes in rats.
