Abstract
Nursing management of a patient undergoing a blood transfusion is important. A comprehensive understanding of the blood transfusion process and areas requiring special attention is important for reducing complications arising from blood transfusion. All staff must be aware of all aspects of care and the principles of safe, effective patient identification, using aseptic technique during transfusion, proper documentation, and adequate management of adverse reactions. This study aimed to assess nurses' performance (knowledge& practice) in managing patients undergoing blood transfusion and the factors that affect nurses’ performance during blood transfusion. Setting: The study was conducted in the surgical and hematology departments at Ain Shams University Hospitals. Study subjects: A convenience sample of all available nurses (n=60) was included in this study; their mean age was 31.6±5.7 years. Data collection tools: a) self-administered questionnaire sheet. b) nurses' practice observational checklist. Results & conclusion: 70% of nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding the management of patients undergoing blood transfusion, and 80% demonstrated an unsatisfactory level of practice in this area. Furthermore, many factors affected nurses' performance, including nurse-related, work-related, and patient-related factors. Recommendations: This study underscores the importance of in-service training courses to enhance nurses' knowledge and practice and to prevent complications associated with blood transfusion.
