A mobile Point of View: a New Reading of Al-Gâhiz' Book of Misers and of Al-Hamadhâni's and Al-Harîrî' Maqamats

Hoda Chamel Abaza;

Abstract

This study is based on a polyphonic interpretation of two masterpieces of Arabic Literature: The Misers of Al-Gâhiz, a work of the ninth century, the Maqamat (or short stories) by Al-Harîrî', edited in the twelfth century. Two works that share two features:
a) they are fragmentary works; b) they demonstrate a didactic purpose in the preface or the afterword, the textual space called by Gérard Genette "paratext".
This study combines two methodological approaches: the Bakhtinian polyphony theory and Rabatel's description of point of view, with the aim to unveil the subversive discourse underlying the seemingly homogeneous and monologal discourse.
