Abstract

This study investigated attitudes and knowledge of pesticide labeling among vegetable farmers in the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia, using a simple random sampling method. The results revealed that a substantial majority of participants expressed a favorable attitude towards pesticide labels. Notably, 89.1% acknowledged the critical role of these labels in safe agricultural practices, while 88.6% affirmed the necessity of not only reading but also adhering to the guidelines provided. Additionally, 81.9% of respondents indicated that it is beneficial to review pesticide labels multiple times. However, most farmers (65.1%) did not consider information on pesticide labels their primary resource for proper application. Instead, reliance on these labels ranked fourth, following oral communication with relatives, friends, or neighbors; consultation with pesticide professionals; and information obtained from social media platforms. The educational attainment of farmers demonstrates a positive correlation with their attitudes and knowledge regarding pesticide labels. To facilitate the safe and effective use of pesticides, it is essential to comprehensively disseminate information on pesticide labeling to farmers. The agricultural extension authorities in Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with pesticide manufacturers, should prioritize the development and implementation of robust training and certification programs for farmers.
