Relation between Perfectionism and Workaholism among Staff Nurses
Fawzia Badran;
Abstract
Background: Perfectionism is striving towards achievement and experiencing
pride in accomplishments which include high-performance expectations with low
levels of negative self-evaluation. Also, it had a significant effect on
workaholism. Aim: This study aimed to assess the relation between Perfectionism
and Workaholism among staff nurses. Design: A descriptive correlational
research study was used to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted
at five University Hospitals. Subjects: The study subjects were selected by
disproportionate stratified sampling technique, randomly of 100 staff nurses from
each hospital from the total included 500 staff nurses. Data collection tools: two
tools were used for data collection, the first one, The Multidimensional
Perfectionism Scale (MPS), and the second, the Dutch Workaholism Scale
(DUWAS). Results: Most staff nurses had a high level of total perfectionism in
all dimensions. Furthermore, slightly more than half of staff nurses were relaxed
workers, some of them were hard workers and some of them were workaholics.
Meanwhile, only a few of them were compulsive workers. Conclusion: There
are moderate positive statistical correlations between Perfectionism and
workaholism. Recommendations: Stressing the importance that nurses should
be guaranteed an adequate and balanced workload. Additionally, organizations
could identify and detect the presence of workaholism among their workers which
could propose specific interventions for them.
