Abstract
Radical cystectomy is most commonly performed for cancer that has invaded
the muscle of the bladder. Kern's Six-Step-based training is an effective approach in health
care education. It enhances clinical practice, reduces the risk of errors and improves decisionmaking
skills. The current study aimed to determine the effect of nursing orientation
program based kern's six-step approach on nurses' performance regarding radical
cystectomy. Design: To fulfill the aim of this study a quasi-experimental design was utilized.
Setting: This study was conducted at the department of surgical oncology and outpatient clinic
in Sohag oncology institute – at Sohag University. Sample: A convenience sample of fifty
nurses who work at the previously selected setting was included. Tools: Three tools were used
for data collection; Tool (I): Radical cystectomy questionnaire (pre/post-test). It consisted of
two parts, Part 1: Nurses’ personal data, and Part (2): Structured multiple-choice questionnaire,
Tool II: Nurses’ practices regarding radical cystectomy, and Tool III: The computation of
training pre-test and post-test score averages determination of training participants’ simulation
score average, and utilization of an institution-developed training evaluation form. Results:There was a highly significant difference between the pre- and post- nursing orientation
program based kern's six-step approach on nurses' performance regarding radical
cystectomy. Additionally, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the
total knowledge and total practice scores of the studied nurses regarding radical cystectomy.
Conclusion: Nursing orientation program based kern's six-step approach implementation
had a positive effect on improving nurses' performance regarding radical cystectomy.
Recommendations: Incorporating the use of nursing orientation program based kern's sixstep
approach as a teaching strategy for all practical knowledge and skills for nurses.
