The Role of Non Contrast MR Imaging in diagnosis of Pulmonary Embolism

Iman Sherif Ahmad Mohamed;

Abstract

Pulmonary embolism is one of the most common emergencies and is considered one of the life threatening conditions. Its diagnosis is considered slightly difficult due to wide spectrum of non-specific signs and symptoms.
CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is the gold standard method for diagnosis of PE.
The major disadvantages of CTPA are large radiation dose exposure and use of iodinated contrast media with its known renal and allergic complications.
So, any pregnant patient, a patient with impaired kidney function or a patient known to have allergy to iodinated contrast are contraindicated to do contrast enhanced CTPA.
Non-contras Magnetic resonance pulmonary angiography (MRPA) is a new method with advantage of radiation avoidance and without the using of nephrotoxic contrast material.
The aim of our study was to assess of the sensitivity and specificity of non-contrast MRPA in detection of acute PE in comparison with CTPA.
