The Role of Non-Invasive Continuous Positive Pressure Ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit

Hoda Fahmy Mahmoud Ali;

Abstract

Treatment of patients who develop ARF often mandates mechanical ventilatory assistance . This traditionally has required ETI , with subsequent application of positive pressure ventilation (Martin et al .,
2000) . In an effort to avoid the morbidity associated with ETI and MV , facemask CPAP (FMCPAP) can be used as an effective modality for treating patients with ARF . It improves oxygenation by reducing intrapulmonary shunt and ventilation-perfusion mismatching. This study was used to evaluate FMCPAP as a mean for non-invasive ventilation in
30 patients (mean age 42.5 years) with acute hypoxemic and I or hypercapnic respiratory failure in an attempt to avoid ETI and MY .
