Effect of Supportive Care Activities on Negative Emotional Feelings and Psychosocial Condition of Orphan Children

Abstract


Many struggle to meet orphan children’s needs for food, clothes and schooling, looking after them when they are sick and giving them love attention and supportive care. This study was aiming to assess the effect of supportive care activities on negative emotional feelings and psychosocial condition of orphan children. Through: assessing negative emotional feelings among children in orphanages and their psychosocial condition, their level of self esteem, loneliness, shame, inferiority, anxiety, depression, their social participation, enjoyment and perceived social support. Accordingly, providing the supportive care activities for children in orphanages and evaluating their effect on the children’s negative emotional feelings and their psychosocial condition. This study was conducted on 60 children at hostel institution orphanage of both young girls and boys. Tools used for data collection were: A) Interviewing questionnaire containing the demographic data of children, their physical assessment of general health condition and children`s emotional negative feelings and precipitating factors for negative emotions among children. B) State self-esteem scale. C) Loneliness scale. D) Inferiority feeling scale. E) Children anxiety scale. F) Children depression inventory. G) The children's assessment of social participation and enjoyment scale. H) Multidimensional scale of perceived social support. The result of this study showed that there was general reduction in orphan children various negative emotions, inferiority feeling, loneliness behavior, anxious and depressive manifestations in addition to there was general improvement of the children self-esteem, social participation and enjoyment interaction and perceived social support after providing the supportive care activities compared to before with statistically significant differences The study recommendation emphasize the need for providing psychosocial counseling and supportive activities programs for vulnerable orphan children in hostel institutions to maintain children's emotional security, wellbeing and meet their needs, enhancing their life skills through educational, psychological, social, and religious supportive interventions. And it is important to considering the fact that psychosocial supportive management is an important component of psychiatric and pediatric care for these children.
