Abstract

Conduct disorder is a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in children and adolescents in which the rights of others or basic social rules are violated. A quasi-experimental study was carried out at The Child Out-patient Clinic of Institute of Psychiatry affiliated to Ain Shams University hospitals. The study was aiming to assess the effect of nursing intervention program on sense of competence, shame and coping responses of parents having children with conduct disorder through assessing the parents' sense of competence, (self-efficacy & satisfaction), shame about children's behaviors and their coping responses, accordingly developing and implementing an intervention program to enhance parents' responses towards their children. The sample consisted of 40 parents having children with conduct disorder. Tools used for data collection included: 1) An interview questionnaire including socio-demographic data for both children and their parents, knowledge regarding conduct disorder, and practices of parents towards their children, 2)Parenting Sense of Competence Scale to measure parenting self-efficacy and satisfaction, 3) Parental Shame Scale to measure the shame that a parent experiences about their conduct child's externalizing behaviors, 4) Parent's Locus of Coping Scale to assess the coping responses of the parents to different sources of stress. The main results showed that, there were general improvements of the level of parents' knowledge, practices, sense of competence, shame and coping responses towards their children with conduct disorder after implementation of the intervention program compared to before with statistically significant differences. The study recommended that orientation programs should be carried out in order to increase public health awareness about the children with conduct disorder. Further research is to be undertaken for parents, that emphasize on assertive training to deal with their children with conduct disorder and how to provide them opportunities for enhancing behaviors, and learning social rules without feeling of shame about them.
