Nature of nurses’ conflict in critical care units

Abstract


Introduction: Conflict is a process involving two or more people, where a person perceives the opposition of the other. Conflict among nurses is becoming a significant issue resulting in job dissatisfaction, absenteeism and turnover. Aim: This study aims at determine nature of nurse's conflict in critical care units through: identifying different types of nurse’s conflict, and assessing causes of nurse’s conflict . Subjects& Methods: This study was conducted in Ain shams University Hospital . Subjects of the study are 300 nurses. Data for this study were collected by using questionnaire sheet. Results: There was statistically significant correlation between types of conflict and causes of conflict. Intrapersonal conflict was the most frequent type of nurse’s conflict at critical care units. The finding showed that the opportunity for pressure at work was the most frequent cause of nurse’s conflict. Conclusion: Based on the study findings it can concluded that, nurses who working in the critical care units had high percentage of conflict. Recommendations: Supportive climate with a variety of options and build trust should be created through effective listening skills. Recognize and accept individual differences among staff. Nurses' educators should give more emphasis on the importance of conflict resolution strategies. Increase self awareness and empowerment among staff to resolve intrapersonal conflict. The organization should go to hire psychiatrist for dealing with employees and their problems.
