Orientation Guidelines for Patients Undergoing Liver Transplantaion

Abstract


This study aimed to assess the biopsychosocial needs of patients undergoing liver transplantation, and develop and evaluate the effect of orientation guidelines for those patients , A quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct this study. This study was conducted at the Liver Transplantation Unit, in Ain Shams Specialized Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University. A purposive sample of 30 patients was consecutively recruited into this study. The sample was calculated by power analysis and sample size calculation program. (three patients per month). The inclusion criteria were adult patients, from both sexes and on preoperative stage. Tools of data collection: An interviewing questionnaire was developed by the researchers to assess biopsychosocial needs of patients undergoing liver transplantation. , Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale: The scale was adopted from Matthew Norman (1959) to assess level of anxiety for patients undergoing liver transplantation., An orientation guidelines booklet was developed, distributed and explained by the researchers to the study sample after nursing assessment of the studied sample needs. Its effects on patient's needs was investigated through comparing the pre/post assessment . Results: The highest needs were the psychological ones followed by the physiological, educational and social needs .There were highly statistically significant differences in patient's needs pre/post orientation guidelines . There is a highly statistically significant difference in patient's biopsychosocial needs and level of anxiety pre/post orientation guidelines Conclusion and Recommendations : Education has highly statistically significant positive effect in decreasing the patient's biopsychosocial needs and their level of anxiety preoperatively . Further studies should be undertaken to evaluate the long term effects of practicing different orientation guidelines to achieve better outcomes
