Abstract

The structure variations and mechanical properties of Sn-Bi based ternary alloy containing Sb were studied for samples prepared from elements of purity 99.99%, homogenized at 463 K for 24h and aged at 443K for 2h, A group of samples of each alloy was slowly cooled to room temperature with a rate of cooling of 1.2x10-2 K/s and the other group was quenched in iced water.
The changes in the mechanical properties of the tested alloys, Sn-12wt%Bi (alloy A) and Sn-12wt%Bi-1wt%Sb (alloy B), were studied through tensile stress – strain tests in the temperature range (333-413) K.
The results showed that the structural properties of ternary alloy B is characterized by the presence of intermetallic compound (IMC) of SnSb particles before the transformation temperature (353K) then disappears at elevated temperature . The ternary alloy B exhibited additional large volume of the IMCs Sb0.21Sn0.79 (tetragonal) and SnBi.
X-ray analysis confirmed the above mentioned phases formed in the ternary alloy B.
The experimental results also indicated that the softening behaviour was observed with increasing the working temperature. The mechanical results were discussed according to the structure analysis of X-ray. Sb addition improved the mechanical properties of the binary alloy A.
