Egyptian Cairene Arabic: A Study in the Theory of Lexical Phonology

Marwa Ali;

Abstract

This thesis examines the relation between phonology, and morphology in Cairene Egyptian Arabic. Theory of lexical phonology is the framework within which this relation is explained. Due to the lexical phonological approach of the analysis, special attention is given to the structure of the lexicon, and the types of morphological, and phonological processes which interact there. Salah Jahin's 'Ar-Rubaaᶜiyyaat' is selected as the corpus of this study, as it is the best example of the Cairene Egyptian Arabic. The study is organized as follows: Chapter one gives an outline of the theory of lexical phonology. Chapter two introduces the phonological and morphological features of Cairene Egyptian Arabic. Chapter three explains the major lexical and post-lexical processes in Cairene Egyptian Arabic. Jahin's 'Ar-Rubaaᶜiyyaat' is used as a case study. Finally, the conclusion presents the findings of the study.
