Abstract

Background: The condition of patients' rights began to have a significant effect in healthcare settings throughout the world. Nurses must make certain that patients and their families know their rights
Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to compare the perception about patient rights among nurse interns and patients, and to identify their personal factors influencing this perception.
Setting: A comparative cross-sectional design was used in this study, which was done at the medical, surgical , obstetrics, and pediatrics departments of Ain Shams University Hospitals during the period from June 2008 to June 2009.
Subjects: Two groups of subjects were included on the study. The first group consisted of 159 intern students in the academic year 2008-2009 at the Faculty of Nursing at Ain Shams University. The second group included a convenience sample of 319 patients admitted in the previous mentioned settings during the period of data collection. Patients of both genders, all age groups and educational levels were consecutively recruited. The only exclusion criterion was patient physical or mental inability to respond to the questionnaire.
Tools of data collection: A structured interview questionnaire form was used to assess nurse interns and patients' perception regarding patient rights. The tool consisted of two parts; the first part was concerned with the socio-demographic characteristic of the two studied groups, while the second part included 124 statements to assess opinions about patient rights. These were classified into 16 categories of patient rights
Results: The results showed statistically significant differences between nurse interns and patients in all areas of patient rights except the rights of decision concerning treatment, and refusing treatment, and these were the areas with the lowest scores in both groups. In all the comparisons, the scores of the nurse interns were higher than those of the patients. Statistically significant relations were noticed between scores of perception of patient rights and intern's age (p=0.006) and working before faculty enrollment (p=0.04), and with patients' age (p=0.006), sex (p=0.03), and income (p=0.01).
Summary & Conclusion: a wide gap is present between nurse interns and patients’ perception of patient rights, which are related to age and work experience of the former, and age, sex, and income of the latter
Recommendations: It is recommended to give more emphasis to ethics and legal issues in nursing curricula, and fostering this in the internship training program. Also, nurses as patients’ advocates must do more effort in raising the awareness of patients concerning their rights.
