Influence of Psychosexual Counseling Based On PLISSIT Model on Sexual Function among Women Post-Hysterectomy

Abstract


Background: Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures among women. they are often worried about the negative effects of hysterectomy on sexual function and believe that their womanhood is impaired. The sexual and psychological complications of hysterectomy affect on marital relations. Aim of the study: Assess the Influence of psychosexual counseling based on the PLISSIT model on sexual function among women post hysterectomy. Subjects and methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. The study was conducted at gynecological outpatient clinics at Ain Shams University Hospital. The sample comprised of 88 women post hysterectomy that were selected through purposive sampling and randomly divided into two equal groups. Women of intervention group received a psychosexual counseling based on PLISSIT model while the control group received routine care only during post-hysterectomy follow up. Tools: A) Structured interview questionnaire, B) Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), C) The Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS) and last tool were D) The Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWBI). Results: the study showed no statistical significant difference between control and intervention group regarding couples satisfaction and total score of female sexual function at base line assessment (p=0.725 , 0.461, p=0.461 respectively). While, there was highly statistical significant difference between control and intervention group regarding couples satisfaction and total score of female sexual function after intervention (p=0.001, p=0.001 respectively). In addition the total score of psychological general well-Being (PGWBI) for intervention group was significantly improved after application of psychosexual counseling. Conclusion: The present study proved that psychosexual counseling was effective on improving sexual function and couples satisfaction among women with different type of hysterectomy Recommendations: Adopting of psychosexual counseling based on PLISSIT model in addressing sexual dysfunction with hysterectomy follow up clinics, beside Integrate the concept of psychosexual counseling based on PLISSIT model in addressing sexual dysfunction into undergraduate curricula for faculties of nursing.
