Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the potential clinical value of assessment of glutathione-s-transferase
(GST)(total and pi fraction) in operative tissue specimens and serum (plasma) of women with
ovarian neoplasia. Setting: Am Shams University Hospital for Women and Oncology
Diagnostic Unit. Material & methods: Serum, plasma and operatively obtained ovarian tissue
specimens from 19 women with normal ovaries (controls), 23 women with benign ovarian
neoplasia and 26 women with ovarian cancer were studied. Quantitative total serum GST
and plasma GST pi were determined using spectrophotometry and enzyme immunoassay
respectively. Ovarian tissue samples were subjected to measurement of cytosolic GST total
and pi fractions by spectrophotometry and enzyme immunoassay as well as detection of its
expression by immunohistochemjcal staining in paraffin sections. Fresh ovarian tissue
