A SIMULATION MODEL OF THE REACTOR HALL VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS OFETRR-2

Mohamed Fawzy Abd El-Rahman;

Abstract

Although the conceptual design for any system differs from one designer to another, each• of them aims to achieve the function of the system required. The ventilation and air conditioning system of reactors hall is one of those systems that really differs but always does its function for which it is designed. Thus, ventilation and air conditioning in some reactor hall constitute only one system whereas in some other ones, they are separate systems. The Egypt Research Reactor -2 (ETRR-2) represents the second type.
Most studies conducted on ventilation and air conditioning simulation models either in traditional buildings or for research reactors show that those models were not designed similarly to the model of the hall ofETRR-2 in which ventilation and air conditioning constitute two separate systems. Besides, those studies experimented on ventilation and air conditioning simulation models of reactor buildings predict the temperature and humidity inside these buildings at certain outside condition and it is difficult to predict when the outside conditions are changed. Also those studies do not discuss the influences of reactor power changes.
Therefore, the present work deals with a computational study backed by infield experimental measurements of the performance of the ventilation and air conditioning systems of reactor hall during normal operation at different outside conditions as well as at different levels ofreactor power.
The study developed a mathematical flow model describing the reactor hall

ventilation and air conditioning system ofETRR-2 withall its components by which the behavior of the system can be predicted in different outside conditions and at different levels of reactor power. Methods of mass balance and energy balance were applied in order for obtaining equations describing the model. For facilitating the treatment of the model equations at different conditions, a program having all thermodynamic properties of air and water was applied while the simulation process takes place.
The infield results used for ensuring the model validity were taken at different power levels of air conditioning heater and at different levels of reactor
power by recording the readings of all the system variables shown that were
