Abstract

This paper aims to analyze facework (Brown& Levinson 1987) employed in German refugee guides that are concepted to help refugees to integrate in the German society. The study focuses on the linguistic analysis of the realization of advices and requests with regard to polite speech behavior in the two following texts: A guide for orientation and communication in Germany (supported by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb)) and Welcome to Germany. Roadmap for Muslim migrants to a successful living together in Germany (published by the Munich Forum for Islam (MFI)). The study examines which politeness strategies are used to counter the presumed facial threat and whether they differ in both texts. The result reveals similarities and differences between both texts according to the employed politeness concept regarding intercultural aspects.
