Biography
Karima Mohsen is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University, Cairo. She holds an M.A. in English Literature (GPA 3.97, A-), a Postgraduate Diploma in English Literature, and a B.A. in English (Honors) from the same institution, in addition to a TESOL Certificate from Arizona State University. Her academic interests include comparative literature, geocriticism, spatial theory, life writing, and minority and diasporic narratives, with particular emphasis on literary representations of Egypt, memory, and space. Her M.A. thesis, Egypt in the Eyes of Egyptians: A Geocritical Study of André Aciman’s Out of Egypt and Lucette Lagnado’s The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit (2007), applies Bertrand Westphal’s geocritical model alongside Edward Soja’s concept of Thirdspace, integrating literary analysis with historical perspectives on Jewish Egyptians in the twentieth century. Her research also includes the paper “Intersectional Geographies: A Geo-critical Exploration of Cairo in Lucette Lagnado’s The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit (2007)”, which further develops her work on space, identity, and layered urban memory. She has presented at international academic conferences, including “Transcendence and Belief after Postmodernism: A Performatist Reading of Patrick Ness’s A Monster Calls (2011).” Alongside her academic career, she is an accomplished literary translator; her published book translations include Restoration by Carol Berg and Border Crossings: My Journey as a Western Muslim by Muhammed Chaoudry. She also contributed to the award-winning translation project The Human Translator in the 2020s by Routledge, produced as part of the team representing the Department of English, Faculty of Al-Alsun, and received recognition in the national “Translate… Create” (ترجم أبدع) competition organized by the National Center for Translation in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, represented by the Supreme Council of Universities.
