Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is twofold: First to examine the continuity and change of Egyptian media discourse following January 25th revolution, secondly to investigate the impact of discourse’s continuity and change on media credibility. To achieve this objective, the discourse of Al Ahram newspaper ( state-owned newspaper) Al Masry Al Youm ( private- owned newspaper) and Al Wafd newspaper ( partisan-owned newspaper) was analyzed during the period from October 2010 to April 2011. Discourse analysis covers six issues including democracy, political elections, freedom of expression, subsidy, social justice and corruption. A random sample of 450 respondents representing undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals were interviewed through a structured face-to-face questionnaire. The results show a substantial transition of Al Ahram newspaper’s discourse following January 25th revolution in comparison to its discourse prior to the revolution. In contrast, the discourse’s change of Al Masry Al Youm was weak while that of Al Wafd was moderate. The results also indicate a credibility crisis facing all newspapers, however, Al Ahram comes first in terms of lack of trust, followed by Al Wafd and Al Masry Al Youm. In other words, the thesis affirms its main hypothesis stating that Egyptian newspapers discourse has changed after the revolution which ultimately causes a credibility crisis among its audiences.
