CORRELATION OF BIOLOGICAL MARKERS IN COLORECTAL CANCER TO CLINICAL OUTCOME OF THE DISEASE )

GEHAN RIZK LABIB BOTRUS;

Abstract

In Egypt, unlike many western countries, colorectal cancer is uncommon,
El Bolkainy, (1998) reported on a series of patients, involving more than
11,614 patients who attended to the NCI, the largest treatment facility for cancer diagnosis and treatment in Egypt, during the period from 1990-
1997. GIT tumors constituted (22.24%) of all malignant tumors with
colorectal disease representing (6.53%) of GIT tumors being more common in males.

Also, colorectal cancer's age distribution is different as well in comparison with western countries. Soliman et a!; (1998) reported that about 35% of Egyptian patients with colorectal cancer were under the age of 40 years. Other investigators have found more than 20 % of these patients to be younger than 30 years of age (Abou-El-Eneine et al; 1986, El-Ghoniemy eta!; 1989).

Unfortunately, metastatic colorectal cancer remains a generally incurable disease with no changes observed in survival rates despite higher response rates from chemotherapy. This situation clearly indicates a considerable need for individualizing the current treatment strategies according to the molecular behavior of the tumor.

Between January 2002 and January 2004, metastatic, recurrent and locally advanced colorectal cancer patients with pathologically proved metastatic disease who presented to the Medical Oncology Department of the National Cancer Institute in Cairo university, were treated and followed up in this prospective study. The main objective was to demonstrate the different expressions ofTS, TP, DPD and MSI (D2S177) and correlate these biological markers with different prognostic factors, response and survival. Also to correlate the DPD expression with the toxicity profile.
