Optimal Allocation of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for Load Management Applications

Ahmed Mahmoud Mahmoud Ahmed;

Abstract

In this chapter, a novel multi-year planning study was performed in order to determine the optimal sizing and siting of energy storage systems in distribution networks to minimize the NPV of the energy losses cost, the NPV of the system upgrades cost and the installation and maintenance costs of candidate DS units and finally maximize the arbitrage benefit. Moreover, a probabilistic load model has been introduced rather than a time series model which is utilized in order to determine the optimal charging/ discharging output power of DS unit at each state to obtain the maximum value of the arbitrage benefit. A sample case study has been performed which consists of two different cases, at each case there are three different storage technologies are studied and compared with the base case (i.e. No installation of DS units). The table of results is introduced and the results show that the integration of DS units in the distribution system can lead to minimize the utilities costs as it is able to make peak load shaving. Finally, the results would be more promising if other benefits of ESSs are introduced as improving the reliability.
