Priorities of Quality Health Care as Perceived by Oncology Nurses and Patients

Abstract

Background Quality healthcare aspects and needs were reported by patients and family members as most important to their experience. Aim of the study was to describing the priority ranking of the aspects of quality health care by oncology patients, describing the priority ranking of the aspects of quality health care by oncology nurses and compare the priority ranking of patients and nurses. Setting: this study was carried out at Sohag cancer center which affiliated to ministry of health, subjects: 220 patients and 50 nurses included in this study two tools were used for collecting data namely: self- administered questionnaire sheet for nurses and interview questionnaire sheet for patients the results demonstrated that the only two statistically significant differences between nurses and oncology patients were found in the aspect of continuity that was higher among patients with mean+SD (4.5+0.4) and the aspect of security that was higher among nurses with mean+SD of (4.6+0.4) when comparison of priority scores ranking between nurses and oncology patients showed there was no significant difference between both groups. Conclusion: The integrity of health care taking the first ranking as aspect of quality health care by nurses, meanwhile respect came as first priority by patient, moreover both of nurses and patients viewed communication with family as least priority. The study recommended A series of workshops regarding concept and aspect of quality in health care should be conducted to raise nurses awareness regarding oncology nurse and oncology patients’ needs and requirements. Replication of the study on a wide scale of patients and nurses is recommended.
