RAIOPROTECTION OF SALIVARY GLANDS IN PATIENTS WITH AND NECK CANCERS
EL-Sayed Mostafa Ali;
Abstract
Head and 11eck cancer patients treated with tadiotherapy undergo certain problems such ::IS xerostolhia due to effect of irradiation on salivaty gla11ds, ttlttcositis due to effect of
irradiation on lnucous me111bn111e attd taste impaithlent due to
the effect on taste buds. This leads to serious t1t1ttitiot1al problems and increase patients morbidity and reduce their quality of life.
Ethyol has a documented capacity in animal inodel system to selectively protect hotitlal tissues against radiatio11 damage The results of early clinical assessment of Ethyol used with radiotherapy have beet1 ehcotttaging.
This works included 20 patie11ts with head and 11eck cancer received radiotherapy; 10 of them received Ethyol prior to radiotherapy a11d the other received radiotherapy alone. They underwent thorough evaluatiol1 by questiol111aire assessment, clinical assessment and laboratory studies which i11clttded [differential blood count, kidney fut1ctiot1 tests, liver ftmctimJ tests, serum calcium and chemical atialysis of saliva].
Our results proved there was no significant side effects of Ethyol when administered prior to radiotherapy with a dose [ 1 00mg/rn2] ptiot to every sessio11 of tteatment.
There was a significru1t reductiot1 in the it1crease of sodium concentrations in saliva which occurred due to damage of salivary glands.
