Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a world-wide public-health problem. According to the World Health Organization, diseases of the kidney and urinary tract contribute to global burden with approximately 850,000 deaths every year and more than 115 million disability-adjusted life years. CKD represents the 12th leading cause of death and 17th leading cause of disability (WHO 2008). The prevalence of dialysis patients in Egypt have increased from 10 per million population (pmp) in 1974 to 225 pmp in 1996 (Barsoum et al. 1996), and then from 403 pmp in 2003 to 483 in 2004 (Afifi 2008).
This work is a part of project aiming at Statement of the current status of dialysis patient in Egypt using a questionnaire. This retrospective study was conducted during a three months period from September 2012 till December 2012. This study was conducted at Assiut city.
Our study sample consisted of (440) ESRD patients on regular HD. Patients were collected from Hemodialysis units of Assiut university hospital, Assuit general hospital, Al Mabarah hospital, and Al Iman Hospital.
The prevalence of ESRD patients on regular hemodialysis in Assiut City was 449/million of the general population. The mean age was 50.6±13.7years, and The prevalence of CKD with ESRD was more in males (260 cases, 59.1%).
Results of this study demonstrated that there were many causes for ESRD in the study population, where HTN 24.5%, DM 10.2%, Obstructive uropathy 13.9%, ADPKD 3.3%, SLE 1.1%, and in 46.8% unknown cause were found. This result agrees with most of the studies where HTN & DM were the main causes of renal failure.
Different comorbidities in the study population were HTN in (71.1%), DM in (10.2%), IHD in (4.8%), and CLD in (1.1%) of patients.
Hemodialysis related complications in the studied patients showed that the hypotension (63%) was the commonest complication during hemodialysis followed by body aches (25%) and cramps (14%)
