Laparoscopic Splenectomy
Ayman Abdullatif Said Abdullatif;
Abstract
Laparoscopic splenectomy can be considered as a safe and efficacious procedure. We believe that laparoscopic splenectomy will be the preferred method of splenic removal for elective conditions. Hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy may be useful in cases of significant splenomegaly.
Not only it has the benefits of less pain, shorter hospital stay and faster recuperation, but also it gives excellent access and control of the vasculature of spleen especially in expert hands.
Open splenectomy is reserved for trauma, extreme splenomegaly and at the discretion of the surgeon.
Attention to preoperative preparation, meticulous technique and careful postoperative care allow excellent results for these procedures.
