A Study for Detection of Axillary and Non-Axillary Sentinel Lymph Nodes in Operable Breast Carcinoma, using Patent Blue Dye

Abstract


A controlled randomized trial is carried out on thirty female patients suffering from operable breast cancer stage (I & II) patients were divided into two groups:
Group I: Fifteen Patients were injected by patent blue dye at the peritumoral region.
Group II: Fifteen Patients were injected by patent blue dye at the subareolar region.
All patients were subjected to:


-Full history taking.


-Meticulous clinical examination, including both axillae for any clinically palpable lymph nodes.
-Routine laboratory investigations.


-Plain X-ray chest.


-Abdominal ultrasonongraphy.


Intraoperative injection of five ml of patent blue dye via a 25-gauge needle peritumoral in group I and subareolar in group !!.Manual compression of the breast with gentle massage was done for five minutes. A modified radical mastectomy was performed upon all patients with total axillary lymph node dissection.
