INTERLEUKIN 12 IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS C

NACHWA EL SAYED MOHAMED GHOBARA;

Abstract

Viral hepatitis is still, as it has been for a long time, a major worldwide cause of acute and chronic liver disease. It is an important public health problem all over the world, not only in terms of overall morbidity, but also in terms of economic Consequences.

HCV is the most common cause of post transfusion non A non B hepatitis and cryptogenic cirrhosis. It remains a challenge to both the physician and virologist.

The interplay between virus C hepatitis and the immune system

1s incompletely characterized. Failure to mount an efficient inunune response to HCV Ags could account for the inability of a large proportion of HCV-infected subjects to eradicate virus infection. This could be due to either selective defects in the host inunune system or virus interference with the normal function of the inunune cells.

Cytokines are involved in virtually every facet of immunity and inflammation including antigen presentation, bone marrow differentiation, cellular recruitment and activation, adhesion molecule expression and acute phase responses.
