Performance Evaluation of Distributed Databases for Mobile Networks

Rashed Khalil Khalil Salem;

Abstract

Location management is a very important serv1ce m mobile communication networks. The two main operations of location management are Location Update (LU) and Paging operations. When a connection needs to be established for a certain user, the network has to determine the user's exact location. The operation of informing the network about the current location of mobile user is known as location update or location registration, and the operation of determining the location of the mobile user is called paging or searching. There is a trade-off between the costs for location update and paging. Unfortunately, current standards of location management schemes, such as GSM and IS-41, behave inefficiently for mobile terminals moving between the same set of areas, or users tending to call and move in a fixed pattern. This is in turn results in a high location management cost.
