BOND BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE BEAMS STRENGTHENED WITH EXTERNALLY BONDED FIBER REINFORCED LAMINATES
Reham Mohammed Galal Ibrahim Eltahawy;
Abstract
Strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) has emerged as a potential solution to the problems associated with civil infrastructure. Nevertheless, possible brittle failures could limit the use of the full efficiency of the FRP-retrofitted system. These brittle failures include premature debonding of the FRP, which could occur at load levels significantly less than the strength of the FRP material used in the strengthened system.
This thesis evaluates and characterizes the bond and load transfer mechanisms between the FRP materials and concrete, and investigates the influence of various parameters on the debonding process.
In principle, the findings of this research program will enable engineers to make competent decisions regarding the repair and/or the strengthening of flexural members. The outcomes will assist in developing reliable design procedures for concrete structures strengthened with externally bonded FRP reinforcement.
8.2 Summary
The research presents an analytical and numerical analysis of the bond failure mechanism of RC beams strengthened in flexure with externally bonded FRP laminates.
This study includes a comprehensive investigation conducted in four phases. The first phase involves the collection and compiling of experimental datafrom experimental studies available in the literature, creating wide spectrum databases.The databases comprisesimply supported RC beams strengthened in flexure with externally bonded FRP laminates and experienced either plate end (PE)orintermediate crack (IC) debonding failure. Two databases are constructed: one for beams that encountered PE debonding failure and another for beams exhibited IC debonding failure.
The second phase introduces the existing design methodologies developed for the evaluation of the FRP bond strength.The available models include empirical formulas, mechanics of materials models, fracture mechanics models, in addition to design formulas in various codes and design guidelines.
The third phase comprises a non-linear finite element (FE) analysis to predict the debonding failure loads/strains of the data gathered from the literature and compiled in the assembled databases.
