SHAPE SELECTIVE AND ELECTRON TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME STYRYLPYRIDINIUM SALTS ENCAGED IN POLYMERIC INTERCALATED COMPLEXES

Abstract

styrylpyridinium salts found wide applications in several areas like the electrochromic compounds, fluorescence probes and non-linear optics. Also, they have been subjected to extinsive continuous investigations because of their photochemical and photophysical characteristics as the photochemical trans cis isomerization, solvatochromic behaviour as well as the formation of relatively stable radicals under photolysis. In addition, styrylpyridinium salts can interact with the three-dimension polymeric
complexes such as [(Me3Sn)3Fe(CN)6 Je to form host-guest
intercalated complexes.

The present studies are concerned with the electron transfer characteristics of some 1-methyl-4-[4'-R-styryl] pyridinium iodides, (R= H, OH, OCH3 , NMe2 , Cl, CN and N02 ),
and their intercalated complexes.

This thesis comprises five chapters:

Chapter I: This chapter includes a general introduction and literature survey on the characteristics of the intercalated complexes and the electrochemistry of pyridinium compounds. Also, the theoretical basis and the dynamics of the photoinduced electron transfer reactions between donors and acceptors in organic solvents were discussed.

Chapter II: In this chapter, the experimental details such as the methods of preparation of the styrylpyridinium iodide derivatives and their intercalated complexes as well as the methods of purification of the electron donors and the solvents were described. Also, it includes a description of the techniques used for the different measurements especially the cyclic voltammetry and the flash-photolysis.
