SIGNIFICANCE OF STRESS-HYPERGLYCAEMIA IN NON DIABETIC PATIENTS WITH FIRST ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION•.

Wageeh Gamil Roshdi;

Abstract

The prevalence of hyperglycaemia defined as whole blood glucose more than I 0 mmoi/L is common in patients admitted to the hospital with Acute-MI.
Hyperglycaemia occurring at admission in patients

with Acute-MI is generally held to represent stress hyperglycaemia, which is a transient, recognized finding during the Acute phase and is considered to be related to stress. As on clinical signs alone, hyperglycaemia as induced by stress can not be differentiated from undiagnosed diabetes. So in the current study, we selected 40 patients admitted in the CCU with confirmed first Acute-MI and strictly normal level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HBA1c) to be quite sure that this hyperglycaemia was an acute event related to stress and
. not due to previously undiagnosed diabetes.
