RECENT MODALITIES IN MEDICAL TREATMENT OF OPEN – ANGLE GLAUCOMA

Ragia Magdy Hatata;

Abstract

Glaucoma is a disease characterized by quantitative and qualitative affection in the optic nerve head as well as the retinal
nerve fibre layer, with progressive visual field loss if treatment is neglected.

This comprehensive essay was conducted to review the literature concerning some of the new drugs that have erupted in the last decade in the field of medical treatment of primary open angle glaucoma as regards their mode of action, pharmacokinetics and side effects.

Recently, prostaglandin analogues and prostanoid derivatives have been developed as therapeutic agents for glaucoma. Prostaglandin analogues have been shown to decrease the intraocular pressure significantly in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Isopropyl unoprostone (Rescula) is a novel and unique prostaglandin compound. Isopropyl unoprostone was used in this study to emphasize the additive effect of prostaglandin compounds on reducing the intraocular pressure in uncontrolled patients with primary open angle glaucoma who were receiving P..-blockers for a minimum of three months. This study also highlights the effect of Isopropyl unoprostone (Rescula) on the blood flow of the posterior pole of the eye and the optic nerve head circulation.

The study included 30 eyes of 15 patients with primary open angle glaucoma.
