Abstract

The most recent studies tested to use the natural products in the protection from chronic liver, renal and cancer disease to avoid the hormonal therapy which has ensured side effects. So this study designed to use one of the natural products known as Ginkgo biloba, tested its ability in the protection from liver and kidney injury in male albino rats which exposed to oxidative stress induced by gamma- radiation or monosodium glutamate administration as "food additive".
Albino rats were divided into 6 groups, each one classified into 2 subgroups (12 rats each) classified as follows:.
GI: Control group.( rats were administrated orally with distilled water).
GII: GBE group (rats were administrated orally with GBE at dose 30mg/ kg b.wt/ day for two weeks).
GIII: IR group (rats were exposed to sub-lethal dose at 6Gy for two weeks).
GIV: IR + GBE group (animals were exposed to the same dose of γ-ray for one time, then administrated orally with GBE at the same dose for two weeks).
GV: MSG group (rats were administrated orally with MSG at dose 4mg/ g b.wt / day for two weeks).
GVI: MSG + GBE group (animals orally administrated with MSG at the same dose as in GV, then after 24 hrs administrated with GBE at same dose for two weeks).
Serum was collected after one and two weeks from all groups for biochemical analysis of alanine and aspartate transaminases, γ- glutamyl transferase activities, the concentration of urea, creatinine, and glucose as well as the activity of glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme.
In this study, tissue samples from liver, kidney, spleen also whole blood were collected and divided into two parts for analysis as follow: Part (A) for measuring the levels of malondialdehyde , metallothionein, glutathione content and the activity of superoxide dismutase in liver and kidney homogenate. Part (B) for measuring the levels of some trace elements :iron, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.
